We are a design store which focusses on local design – our product range is an interesting, unique, bespoke range of gifts, jewellery and homewares that we have carefully curated to delight our customers.
We support more than 200 local designers and artists, some well known international brands, and also produce a range of HAPA designs.
We believe that things that are made well last longer, and support and admire quality craftmanship. HAPA’s aim is to keep surprising and inspiring our customers, and to contribute positively to our local economy.
HAPA is a word with many interesting meanings. In Te Reo Māori it refers to something imperfect, a puzzle, out of place… we like its resonance with the handmade products that we showcase, which are not “machine made” perfect – they show the heart, handprint and humanity of the makers. Its also a reference to our origins in the aftermath of the earthquakes in 2011 – a “hapa ripa” is the Māori phrase for “fault line”.
HAPA began life in 2011 located inside a shipping container in the Re:Start Container mall project. Designed to bring back life into the city, the innovative mall consisted of a group of shipping containers and was the first CBD red zoned area to open to the public after months of being closed, due to the devastation of the 2011 earthquakes.
7 years later in January 2018 the Container Mall closed its doors for good, and all tenants relocated to different parts of our new central city.
We opened our brand new HAPA CENTRAL store (in May 2018) in the busy BNZ Centre here at 111 Cashel st. Enter the BNZ Centre off both Cashel and Hereford streets – we are next to Wok It To me and opposite Little Brews Cafe!
